Own a Seasonal Small Business? Here Are the Most Effective Strategies for Hiring Employees

Owning and operating a seasonal business comes with unique challenges. One of the challenges you may face involves finding enough quality employees to keep your company running smoothly. Below are some tips to help you find employees who are willing to work on a seasonal basis but also provide the level of service you need.

  1. Make detailed job advertisements.
When you develop job advertisements, include all of the details related to the job so that you can be sure you are attracting the right candidates. Include the responsibilities, the dress code, the expected hours and any other information that may be relevant. You should also state clearly that the job is a temporary, seasonal position. When employees are aware of the details of the job and the fact that it’s seasonal from the beginning, they are less likely to become disappointed and leave after they have been hired.

  2. Be proactive.
The best seasonal employees will be contacted by employers early in the hiring season, and the competition can be fierce. Begin contacting your best former employees and get a commitment before they make any other plans for the season. You should also contact the best applicants in your pool as quickly as possible to schedule interviews.

  3. Offer competitive pay and benefits.
When it comes to attracting the best employees, you are going to have competition. If you are having trouble finding good employees, consider raising the pay you offer or providing other benefits of employment that will attract good workers. Otherwise, you may end up with employees who aren’t capable of providing the good quality services you need for a successful season.

  4. Provide sufficient training.
One of the biggest problems faced by seasonal employers is high employee turnover. To prevent turnover, make sure that each employee is well trained before he or she begins working. Proper training provides employees with the skills they need to be successful on the job.

  5. Don’t be understaffed.
When your company is known for being understaffed, it becomes more difficult to hire good employees. The best employees will avoid jobs where they are likely to work difficult schedules or take on more duties than they can reasonably manage. Make an effort to employ the appropriate amount of people during every part of the season.

  6. Payroll.
Many small business owners procrastinate in hiring employees, either seasonal or year-round, because they dread the hassles involved in preparing and managing a payroll. A simple solution is to outsource your payroll needs to a payroll processing company that specializes in servicing small business clients.

If you operate a seasonal business, having the right employees is essential. When you have good employees, you can be sure that you will be able to continue providing the excellent level of service your customers expect. By following the tips above, you can improve your hiring process and enjoy better profitability.
